Young people in the Banbury area can now try out the sport of boxing for next to nothing.
Banbury Boxing Club working in partnership with Cherwell District Council, are offering youth classes for just £1. The scheme has been made possible due to funding from Sport England’s Sportivate programme, a national initiative which funds local authorities to increase sporting opportunities for young people.
Councillor George Reynolds, Cherwell’s deputy leader, said: “Boxing is not just about learning to land blows. It teaches respect, agility and self-control.” He added: “Thanks to Sportivate’s backing we have teamed up with Banbury Boxing Club to offer cut-price classes. By lowering the barrier to entry we can give those who have never boxed before, or would like to return to the sport, their opportunity to throw their hat in the ring.”
Giving young people the opportunity
Boxing coach Ben Malcher said: “As a coach I hear it all the time; ‘I wish I had started boxing when I was younger!’. Sportivate will give young people the opportunity to enter the sport at an age that will maximise their chance of success.”
“We simply encourage people to come down and see for yourself, join in and take advantage of this offer. We all know the hardest thing to do is walk through the door of a new club. The volunteer Coaches at Banbury Boxing Club are making the time to run extra classes for the sportive programme and without them this would not be possible.”
The classes are open to youngsters of any ability and will provide a full-body workout focussing on circuit based activities and pad work to hone the boxing skills.
There is also a female only class Tuesday’s between 6.30 and 7.30pm for 10 to 15-year-olds and from 7.30-9pm for 16 to 25-year-olds.
Mixed sessions will be held on Mondays and Thursdays, from 6.30-7.30pm for 10 to fifteen-year-olds and from 7.30-9pm for 16 to 25-year-olds. Session prices session are £1 for ages 10-15 and £1.50 for ages 16-25. Attendees will also be offered a free year of membership, normally worth £20.
